Abstract
Tissue-specific effects of pH, ATP, CaCl2 and aging on cytochrome oxidase activity were compared in mouse. Optimum pH was 7 in all the tissues examined. Addition of ATP activated enzyme activity in 4 tissues; maximum activity was found at 15mM, 50mM, and 35mM in liver, spleen, and both muscle and brain, respectively. Presence of CaCl2 inhibited both muscle and brain enzyme while activated liver and spleen enzyme; maximum activity was found at 10 mM in these two tissues. 24% decrease in enzymatic activity was found in aged spleen whereas twofold increase found in aged brain. Effect of aging on enzyme activity was various depending on tissue types.
